Did I ever mention how much I love talking theory with other Zelda tards? no? Well I do :3
I will copy/paste a section of text written about

THIS PERSON whom I now admire more than I've ever admired a stranger in my life. Here's how it went.
*from Diligo*
I can't say it any better than this guy does.
The gerudo are the twili. TP occured 100 or so years after OoT, and a male Gerudo is born every 100 years, the second known male is known as...Zant. Midna said their race were banished from Hyrule, which is understandable why the Gerudo was banished seeing how Ganondorf himself is Gerudo.
Pay attention to the fight with Ganon at the end of TP, he too possesses the power of the Twilight. Once Midna turns back to human form, she resembles a Gerudo. Isnt it also weird that the portal to the Twilight Realm is in the Gerudo Desert? Im not sure how much clearer TP can show everyone that the twili are in fact the gerudo.
Im actually going to be writing a full blown article concerning this later, full of spoilers.
EDIT : Ok while playing Twilight Princess again, I have found in game quotes pretty much proving the gerudo are the twili.
Quotes by Auru (speaking of Gerudo Desert) : "The criminals who were sentenced to death were sent directly to the uderworld by a cursed mirror that was kept in the prison" "This desert at worlds end...it still holds the cursed mirror and the malice of the doomed inmates"
Midna (right when you enter the Gerudo Desert) : "About the fused shadows...what do you think happened to the magic wielders who tried to rule the sacred realm?" (screen gazes to the desert wasteland) "They were banished...They were chased along the sacred lands of Hyrule and riven into another realm by the goddesses."
Then goes to cut scene explaining the realm. "Its denizens became shadows that could not mingle with the light, eventually most came to call it..the twilight realm." "This is the history of th twili as it has been passed down from our ancestors". " Do you now undertstand what Iam?...I'm a descendant of the 'tribe' that was banished to the twilight realm"
Aside from all that, Ganondorf himself was banished to the realm of twilight...
Sages "Only the true leader of the twili can utterly destroy the mirror of twilight...so Zant could only merely break it into pieces"
The Gerudo are the Twili.

I did mention in my comment that if they were in fact the banished ones, then they ARE the Twili, as in, they did not simply disappear off the face of the planet (well technically yes, different realm = not same planet in some cases) but their descendants would have changed form over time.
You (and your source) actually have a really nice case, I probably overlooked it with all my complaints about the overall game in general (don't get me wrong, it's still epically awesome, but pales in comparison to previous games)
I was basing it off of MM (which now that I look back on it, was said to take place in another realm itself, much like LA and PH) because of the similarities between the tribe mentioned in the game that was said to have disappeared well before the Gerudo, leaving some to believe that the Twili were creatures that were already there when Ganondorf had been banished, seeing as their "disappearance" could have meant they met a similar fate but at a much earlier point in time.
The ancient magic used sounded similar to Majora's Mask, and the eyes on the mask match the eye that's on Midna's helm. Not only that, but the back of the helm when the four pieces are combined have a Sheikah's eye symbol, and if their ancient magic pointed to the Sheikah, wouldn't someone believe they could themselves be connected to the Sheikah?
There was a time when the Sheikah were betrayed by the royal family, thus the crying eye, and it's possible that the tribe mentioned in MM were a sect of Sheikah.
Not only that, but Zan't helm is in the shape of a frequently used symbol in MM again, the face with it's tongue out. The top of the stone tower and at a few instances within the tower there were many faces, the entrance itself being a face with its tongue sticking out (said to be "mocking the gods") which would also connect to the tribe mentioned in MM that used ancient hexing magics, because if they were defying the gods, they would be cast out.
Though, if you place it correctly, it's possibly that even in this case, all three tribes, the Sheikah, the Gerudo, and the one that was never named, could be connected, and that at on point or another, all three (or at least two) were sent into the Twilight realm, mingling amongst each other as well, meaning the Gerudo would be the latest addition to the people of the Twilight, but not the first, and possibly not the last.

I am in my happy place :3
After coming home early, still being DIZZY as heck, sniffling, stomach ache, headache, not going to class *nerg D: * taking a nap and waking up still dizzy, I get to read this, and then I float off in a dream.
I think in some cases, people hate being shown up like I obviously was, but this...this INSPIRES me! It makes me want to talk about Zelda, break out the music, draw pics...(if I wasn't hitting a block D: ) and be merry.
In fact, I might just go play me some MM now. Because now I miss it.
But to :devDilido: I say:
Thank you.
You, are a true debater and awesome theorist, you have your sources straight, you have your argument, you would pwn my in my speech class right now.

If I wasn't in pain I'd be ever happier :3
*edit* I do believe that there is more than one tribal contribution to the Twili, because that's where the godesses would send all those who have been defiant of them, imo. At least their backup XD In Ganondorf's case: "Well, the Sacred Relm didn't work, nor the Dark realm...let's go back to plan A! *smite*"

Wow, I can't believe I never made that connection... I even had moments where I was like "The gerudos resemble the Indian people" and then I'd turn to another comment and say the EXACTSAME THING about the Twili.

But awesome comparison and fact checking. It does make sense now that I think about it. I just look at Ganondorf and then at adult Midna and wonder how something as gorgeous as her could be related to something as... well... as Ganondorf. o_O

I respectfully disagree.
TP shows the sorcerers who tried to invade the Sacred Realm in Lanayru's flashback, and they are clearly not Gerudo. Plus, it doesn't seem in that flashback that the Sacred Realm had yet been sealed off from the rest of Hyrule, placing that event well before Ganondorf's attempted takeover.
The thing with Zant's mask...the tongue sticking out thing is a common Japanese motif, I don't think it's at all significant. Neither is the coincidence that Midna's got red hair.
HOWEVER. With all that said, if criminals were routinely tossed into the mirror, and there are no Gerudo in TP's desert, it's a pretty sure bet that at least SOME of the Twili are, or are descended from, the Gerudo who fought with Ganondorf, who would have been thrown into the Mirror for their crimes. Probably the Sages saved Ganny for last.
But due to the influence of the Twilight Realm, they wouldn't be Gerudo anymore, and the 100-year male curse would not hold (my impression while playing TP, in fact, was that Midna was the ONLY female Twili -- none of the others got bewbs, yo).
aaaand meeting, gotta go.
